What our Participants are saying...

I was overwhelmed with the understanding shown by Shumaila (in the advocacy burnout to breakthrough call) and really had a strong sense that she appreciated the struggles I have and recognised similar obstacles and problems to me. Her empathy and ability to connect with me and recognise how I approached my work was extremely valuable and comforting.  I felt understood and valued during the call and came away with  renewed hope and optimism that not only can I continue my advocacy work in a more compassionate way to myself, but also that those I work with/for will be better supported too.  A most productive [advocacy burnout to breakthrough] call with clear advice and methods provided  for future work together.  I am indeed most grateful for the time spent .

Learning from Shumaila has been an enriching experience for me. Her vast knowledge and adeptness at incorporating diverse learning methods into each class make each session truly engaging. I particularly enjoy the meditations intertwined with the essence of raag, fostering a deeper connection to the music. Shumaila's approach to exploring various raags and seamlessly guiding through the practice has expanded my understanding and appreciation of this art form. Shumaila's dedication to her students' progress is evident in every aspect of her teaching, making her an exceptional mentor in the world of music.

I was amazed at the series of workshops by Shumaila Hemani. In my 22 years of experience in the climate field, I never have never had the opportunity to combine my background in film/photography/art with climate change. The work Shumaila is doing is incredibly innovative, and I think it touched a deep yearning among the participants to seek equity and justice in this world in which we are immersed.

Talking to Dr. Shumaila about imposter syndrome helped me gain a new understanding of how to relate to my fears. I realized that challenging ourselves puts us in uncomfortable zones, and that process of self-doubting is significant for growth. Her insights were incredibly valuable. It was a pleasure to meet her; she was a very kind mentor and used a gentle approach to help me overcome my fears.

Creating New Pathways for Social Impact

A systemic approach to burnout means shifting focus from viewing poor work-life balance or toxic productivity as causes of burnout. Instead, it recognizes them as outcomes of systemic factors affecting individuals. Blaming individuals for these outcomes is counterproductive. My approach acknowledges systemic oppression's impact on work-life balance and feelings of inadequacy, aiming for systemic change that addresses these root causes. I aspire to cultivate a community of advocates who support each other and resist oppressive forces that threaten creativity and well-being. I aim to empower creatives and advocates to sustain themselves and keep shining their light amidst challenging circumstances.
